It didn’t take a genius to see this coming. Regular readers (both of you!) will remember me predicting back in January 2016 that Mr trump is about to demonstrate that America belongs (quote) not just to the wealthy, liberal, cogniscenti for whom synthetic outrage and political correctness is a way of life, but also to the semi-literate, impressionable Facebook friends who have realised that generations of unheard voices may have found a mouthpiece.
Despite the polls, despite the media and despite the wealthy, liberal, cogniscenti for whom synthetic outrage and political correctness is a way of life Donald trump has made his way into the White House, and as Commander-in-Chief of US, and therefore NATO forces, will be responsible for our security from January for at least four years. However, the world is still spinning on its axis – resilient it seems to both Brexit and Trumpit so far, defying the doomsayers who were convinced their heads were about to explode in the mayhem of the predicted market armageddon. Personally, I did quite well, buying and selling in a rising market. Interestingly, insurance stocks plummeted whilst defence(read: weapons) stocks went ballistic on the off-chance that the President Elect is about to push the button on Inauguration Day.
Actually, this is quite interesting. The market seems to be reacting very well to Trump’s election. It’s proof, if that were ever needed, that nobody has a clue about economics and that the chances of any stock price moving up or down on any one trade are exactly 50/50. The rest is just down to how excited the hedge fund managers can get.
No word from Hillary, yet. I’m guessing she’s sulking in the kitchen while Bill gets rid of his Gallup and YouGov stocks and starts planning his next golfing trip with the lads, but definitely not to Scotland. It certainly wasn’t very gracious of her not to make a speech on election night conceding the election to The Donald but I’m guessing she never even had one prepared, so confident was she that the entire nation was scared stiff of having to listen to the Red Baron congratulating his family and everyone who knows him after his heroic dogfight with the liberal establishment.
So what now, America?
More guns. Less affordable healthcare. Fewer Mexicans. Frightened Muslims. Polling experts hanging their heads in despair at people who won’t answer a simple question on the phone truthfully. Apart from that, will anything change? I doubt it. America will still be the land of opportunity, so let’s see how long we can work the trumponomics.
